Vote or Die? Can I have a third option?

6 03 2008

Election time has come around again! I’m not speaking about the United States presidential race, but elections for student governments and other clubs.

In my college paper today there was a opinion published about Oklahoma States own student government elections. The writer apparently thought it cute when he stated that he didn’t really care who the candidates were or what their platforms consisted of, but he that he voted for whoever’s name came first because voting was “fun”.

I found the article greatly offensive.

With all the PSA’s telling people to participate in the elections, including the infamous “Vote or Die” campaign, I have to wonder if all these voters are actually taking time to consider the canidates or the issues. If a person is not well enough informed on what is going on, it is better to refrain from voting than to vote ignorantly.

Voting is civic duty, and if that duty cannot be completed to the best of someones ability, than they should not attempt to do it.
